Standing out at a
conference of engineers

The AIChE Annual Meeting is one of the largest chemical engineering events in North America. Hundreds of companies compete for attention with polished booths, technical presentations, and years of brand recognition. IPEX — a leader in thermoplastic piping systems — had always shown up. But in 2022, they wanted to do something different.

The question wasn't how to explain their products better. The question was how to make people remember the conversation — and walk away with something that connected IPEX to the future of their industry.

Where comedy
meets engineering

IPEX reached out to MalPensando — a Toronto-based Latin comedy brand with a track record of turning corporate presentations into genuine human experiences through theatrical storytelling and audience engagement.

Three-Way Creative Partnership
MalPensando brought the theatrical concept and audience engagement. Boli.Media brought AI-integrated production and full event documentation. IPEX brought the brief — and the trust to let us execute something genuinely new.
Boli.Media's Role
AI image generation workflow (Midjourney), real-time printing operation, full event coverage in photo and video — daily reels, 3-day photographic documentation, and a final edited video for YouTube delivery.
03 — The Concept

The Innovation Lab

The booth was designed to feel like entering a different reality — dark, controlled, deliberately separate from the conventional trade show floor. Two MalPensando performers, dressed as scientists, welcomed each visitor into what felt like a research environment.

Each visitor was asked three questions about the future — how they imagined infrastructure, environment, and materials evolving in their industry. Their answers fed directly into AI image generation.

Using Midjourney — then a cutting-edge tool just entering public awareness — the responses were translated into unique visual outputs in real time. Each image was printed twice: once for a growing physical collage on the booth wall, and once for the visitor to keep.

By the end of each day, the wall had become a collaborative artwork made from the collective imagination of the industry's engineers. No two images were the same.

"The concept connected IPEX to AI before most companies were even talking about it. That was the point."

Three questions.
One image.
Printed live.

01 — The Interview
Visitors were greeted by two scientist-characters. Three targeted questions explored their vision of the future: infrastructure, environment, materials. Each answer captured in real time.

02 — AI Generation
Responses converted into structured Midjourney prompts by the Boli.Media production operator. Output in under 2 minutes, visually consistent with the experience aesthetic.

03 — Print & Display
Every image printed twice — one for the visitor, one for the growing collage wall. By day's end, a large-format physical installation emerged from the collective imagination of the industry's engineers.

AI Integration Note

This project ran in 2022 — before AI image generation had entered mainstream conversation. Using Midjourney at a corporate engineering conference wasn't just an execution choice. It was a positioning signal: IPEX was thinking about the future before the future arrived. That's why the experience resonated. And why they came back.

22
The Original — Innovation Lab Concept Launched
First execution of the AI-powered booth experience at AIChE. Midjourney deployed at a corporate engineering event before mainstream AI adoption. Collage wall completed over 3 days. Client feedback: immediate request to repeat the following year.
23
Year Two — Concept Refined
Returned with production improvements based on year one learnings. Prompt workflow optimized for faster output. Visual system evolved. Event coverage expanded. Full deliverable package repeated.
24
Year Three — Proven System
Third consecutive engagement. The experience had evolved into a recognizable IPEX event signature. Production system fully established. Variations introduced to keep the experience fresh for returning AIChE attendees.

"The best client outcome is when they stop thinking of you as a vendor. After three years at AIChE, we were part of how IPEX shows up in the world."
